The week in tech 09/01/2023
This is the first of a weekly series in which I give you the most important and interesting posts in the tech world over the past week. It’ll hit your inbox every Friday so you can read it whilst pretending to work just before the weekend.
There isn’t much in this weeks edition as I’m not yet in the habit of keeping my eyes open for tech news. Future issues will be better. If there’s something you think merits inclusion, DM me on Twitter.
State of JavaScript 2022 has been released: https://2022.stateofjs.com.
If you’re not familiar with this, it’s the what’s hot and what’s not of the JavaScript world. Each year thousands of devs are surveyed to find out what the most popular parts of the JavaScript world are, from language features to frameworks. It’s really good for drawing your attention to new things. You can even see how your salary stacks up.
Finally (yes I said this issue was light on the ground!) we have a really interesting article on analysing tech salaries at a startup from the Pragmatic Programmer:
https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/inside-pollens-software-engineering
You’ll really want to pay attention to the part about the “trimodal” nature of engineering salaries. It explains why the differences in pay at different companies are huge, and will point you in the right direction in terms of maximising salary.
Until next time, happy coding.
